Seventh Grade Curriculum
Grades 7 to 10 will take two different core classes each semester, each class taught by a different instructor. They will also receive a 1/2 hour mini class. This model allows us to cover a diversity of topics with a wider pool of teachers.
Structure:
2 1 hour core classes each week, service and mini class alternate every other week.
7TH GRADE
1st Semester
Core 1: CHAI-Level 6
What is Revelation and how do we experience it? Is there a human role in divine revelation? Students investigate Biblical texts which relate to the individuals relationship with God, study the components of the Torah service and the role of the shliach tzibur (prayer leader), and gmilut chasadim on a more universal level. The three themes are: 1. Ketuvim; My Relationship with God. 2. Torah Service and My Role in it. 3. Gmilut Chasadim and the World; Widening Circles of involvement.
Core 2: Jewish Values/Bar-Bat Mitzvah Preparation
This core will consist of two miniclasses. Students actively participate in discussions concerning how to engage in Jewish values such as Bikkur Cholim, Hachnasat Orchim (hospitality), Kibud Av Vem, Hiddur Pnai Zaken (respect for elderly), Vahavta Lreyacha (loving ones neighbor), Nedarim, Shalom Bayit (peace in the home). Students will also continue Bar-Bat Mitzvah preparation.

2nd Semester
Core 1: CHAI-Level 6 (see above)
Core 2: The Worship Service
(Teaching Tefillah)/Reform and Conservative What is the structure of the Conservative Siddur and the Reform Siddur? How do the differences in style and language reflect the theology of the movements? Also -- What does it mean to pray, and how does one engage in prayer? How does the choreography add to - or detract from - the worship experience?
Mini Class: Current Events
Hebrew:
Advanced Mid-Week Hebrew (optional for Temple Emanuel students) taught by Rabbi Krischef.
Parent Involvement:
Parents are expected to insure their child attends Religious School regularly and on time. In addition, parents will be responsible for reading all materials sent home and reinforcing the lessons learned during Religious School. Parents are expected to read the novels their child is reading and be able to discuss the issues raised with their child. Parents are expected to participate in parent/child learning experiences planned by the teacher and/or Religious School.
